When I
was a kid I loved to play in the dirt. I was always looking for buried
treasure. I am pretty sure at some point in my childhood, I wanted to be an
archaeologist and be famous for my many finds. I never found any true treasures,
but I did have lots of fun looking! Today I found myself thinking about
archaeologists and how careful they are at planning out their digs, carefully
removing the dirt from the sites and how delicately they sift through what they
find. This also reminded me of our God and how careful He is with every aspect
of our lives. He planned each and every one of us, and carefully and lovingly
has set before us His plan for our lives. In a sense, we are His treasures,
just waiting to be unearthed.

This
was in my mind today as I thought about all the upcoming changes that I am
facing. I found myself telling the Lord that I had no idea what I was doing and
there was no way I could do what He was asking of me. He reminded me that I
didn’t know how to start a company either, but look at how far He has brought
us. He reminded me once again that I am fearfully and wonderfully made, and
that He is still the Author and Creator of it all. I am His treasure, and He is
the Archaeologist of my life.
“O Lord, You have searched me and
known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts
from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all
my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue behold, O Lord, You know it
altogether. You hem me in, behind and before and lay Your hand upon me. Such
knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high, I cannot attain it.” Psalm 139:
1-6 ESV
When an
archaeologist digs up a site, they carefully dig and remove the dirt, sifting
it, examining it and cataloging everything they find. God searches us much the
same way. He carefully uncovers all our thoughts, all our deeds, motives, etc,
and examines every aspect of them. David tells us that He examines our sitting
down. He examines and sifts through where we pitch our tents, why we stay where
we stay, why we dwell where we dwell. He not only examines it, He sifts through
the very reasons why we made the choice to pitch our tent in that spot, and why
we chose to move to a different spot. He examines every single part of our
lives from the time we are born to the time we die. He not only examines our
ups and downs, but He also discerns our thoughts and understands them even
before we do. God sifts through our thoughts, discerning which ones are good
and which ones are not so good. He distinguishes between every single one of
them even before you or I think them.
There
is no thought you can think that God has not already fully examined. There is
no move you can make that God has not already worked out and made straight. Romans
8:28 encourages us that “all things work together for good to those who
love God to those who are called according to His purposes.” If
we are in His hands, if we are following His Word then nothing, absolutely nothing
goes unnoticed under His care.
We are His treasure
waiting to be unearthed.
Every
single moment of your life and every single thought you think, He has seen, He
has sifted, He has examined and He has worked it out for your good and His
glory. Nothing can shake the hedge He has build around you unless He allows it
to be shaken. Our human minds are too small to grasp the greatness of His
intimate knowledge of our lives. Like David said, “Such knowledge is too wonderful for
me; it is high, I cannot attain it.” (vs. 6)
“Where shall I go from Your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there.
If I make my bed in Sheol, You are there! If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there Your hand shall lead
me, and Your right hand shall hold me.” Psalm 139:7-10
If then
He is examining every single speck of dust from our lives, where can we go? We
cannot hide from Him because He knows where we are going to run even before our
feet hit the floor. He knows where we are hiding because He saw our fear even
before we did. Even if, in our haste, we try to run as far away from Him as
possible, He knows where to find us. Remember Jonah? He tried to run away. He
tried to avoid the call of God upon His life, but God knew exactly where he was
every single second of the day. Even in the belly of the whale, God’s hand
never left him. His hand was upon Jonah leading and guiding the whale to throw
him up on the beaches of Nineveh. God’s hand allowed every circumstance and
every event of Jonah’s life to lead him right to the place and the purpose of
his very existence. Nothing happens to us that has not first been sifted and
examined by the hands of our God.
“If I say, ‘Surely the darkness
shall cover me, and the light about me be night,’ even the darkness is not dark
to You; the night is bright as the day, for darkness is as light with You.”
Psalm 139: 11-12
Psalm 139: 11-12
God has
already sifted through your excuses, your fears and your reasoning; and there
is no darkness with Him. He sees it all completed and it is good and right with
Him. We may not be able to see through the darkness of our fears, or the nights
of our inadequacies, but God sees through them all. To Him it is naked and
open, there is nothing hidden from His sight (Hebrews 4:13). He has seen the
end from the beginning and has already worked it out for your good and His
glory.
“For you formed my inward parts; you
knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and
wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My
frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately
woven in the depths of the earth. You saw my unformed substance; in Your book
were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet
there was none of them.” Psalm 139:13-16 ESV

He has
created you and formed everything about you. You were meant to be born and to
live the life that you are now living. God knew beforehand every single thing
that would happen and will happen to you for the rest of your existence. He has
woven your tapestry upon His heavenly loom and it is beautiful my friend, just
absolutely beautiful. It is vibrant, it is perfect and you are His. You are His
treasure being unearthed right before His grace-filled eyes.
He
wrote your story down in His book. He planned your entire life, from the moment
of your conception to the day you will join Him in eternity. Everything that
has happened to you, every experience, and every moment of your life has been
to bring you to the place and the purpose of your existence. You were created
for this exact moment, for this exact purpose, for this very day. Every gift,
talent and bit of knowledge you have is from Him, for Him and for the purpose
He has created you for.
Your
life’s experiences, your joys, your pains, your hurts and yes, even your sins
were used and will be used by God to bring you to the place and purpose He has
created you for. He has written out the blueprints of your life and every nail,
every wall and every doorway is just another thread He has woven in the
tapestry of your life.
You are His
treasure being unearthed right before our eyes.
No
matter where you are in life today, whether saved or not saved, God intended
for you to read these words, at this exact moment. He has woven this moment
into the story He has written about you. Perhaps you are experiencing great
pain in your life right now, or perhaps you are rejoicing in the beauty of His
goodness towards you, or perhaps you are standing in a doorway and fear has
gripped your heart. Where ever you are sitting down or rising up at this
moment, you can take comfort in the knowledge that He has woven this moment
into the fabric of your life and it is beautiful in His eyes. He sees the
finished work, my friend. He sees the glory that will become your life. He sees
the dirt and He has made it into a masterpiece for the world to see. You are
His treasure; trust Him to bring you up out of the earth. Amen?
